Jacqueline Mendez, who writes under the name of JAX, is a retired schoolteacher with a Masters degree in Education and Bachelors in Liberal Arts. While teaching, she wrote a play, “Promises,” that earned her a superior status award at the 2004 UIL One-Act Middle School competition. This encouraged her to contribute two of her pieces to Chicken Soup for the Latino Soul (Grandma’s Recipe and A Bridge to Freedom), from which both were also published. In April 2007, she published her first fantasy novel, Heart of the Jaguar (the first out of three in the series) under the name of JAX. She is currently conducting research for the prequel to her second novel. You can read samples of her rough draft chapter on her myspace blog at: www.myspace.com/writingjax. Her short story, A Shadow to Call her Own, was published by Amazon Shorts. It was rated in the top 30 of the family drama section for a month. To learn more about her current projects and most recent published work, visit her myspace blog.

JAX participated in several speaking engagements such as the Reading Awareness symposium at Weslaco STC (Oct 20007), Latino Writer’s Society in San Antonio, TX (April 2007), San Antonio College Author book Fair (April 14 2007), appeared on Radio Ventana-- an online radio station (April 2007), spoke at the University of Texas at Brownsville (May 2007), the Edwards James Olmos festival in Dallas, TX (2006), made appearances in the San Antonio Living Show on WOAI (2005), and has done promotional readings with Barnes & Noble. She is also a member of IFMASA (Independent Film Maker's Association of San Antonio) and an advocate for battered women and children of abuse.

As a motivational speaker, her goal and purpose in life is to encourage young teenage girls to stay in school and pursue their dreams.
